Mommy Guilt

Emma has been telling me that her tummy hurt for a week or two. I would ask her if she needed to go poo-poo or something, then move on. She played and acted fine, so I didn't think a whole lot about it. Meanwhile, she had a rash on her hip, and some spots on her leg and arm. I just assumed they were heat bumps or mosquito bites. I've been doctoring them with Neosporin and not thinking about it too much.

Today, Emma and I went to eat Mexican food. She was so excited and talked about eating chips and dip. When we got seated, she wouldn't eat any! That was my first clue that something was really up! Then she started saying her tummy hurt again. Said "Hold my tummy, Mommy!" She took my hand and pressed it really hard against her stomach. Finally, I woke up and realized something was wrong!

I called the clinic and talked to a nurse, who said bring her on in! All this time, I am still thinking there is something wrong with her stomach!

So long story short... the doctor says she has pharyngitis (an infection in her throat), and swallowing the infection could be causing her stomach to hurt. It never occurred to me that her throat hurt!! As an after-thought, I said look at this rash. He looked at it and right away says that looks like shingles. What the what! The worst thing I thought he was going to say was poison ivy, but I figured he would say it was just a heat rash. Not shingles! He went on to say that he wasn't 100% sure that it was shingles, but he would rather be safe than sorry! BTW- shingles could be causing her tummy to hurt, also!

We came home with an antibiotic and two creams.

I am such a good mom! Never occurred to me that she was sick, much less had a seriously painful thing going on. I guess Emma will get lots of spoiling for a few days, if nothing else than to make up for my guilt!
