Yard Work

The day started as a lazy Sunday, but that soon ended. Clinton was firing up the smoker for supper, and I just kept looking at the huge pile of pine needles in one corner of our yard. It's been there for as long as we've lived here (2.5 years), but I'm sure it's older than that. One of those things we've just kept putting off. I got a wild hair to clean it up, totally out of my character! Ha!

Here it is mostly done already.

Giant burn pile.

Little Miss with her own rake. That she threw a fit for. Sigh.

And just a little butt hanging out. Always.

I didn't get a before or after, only during. But it's done and the yard looks much better! And I have a blister. Ugh.

Sprucing up the back porch

Clinton and I decided the back porch needed a little work. And first on the list was our dilapidated picnic table (no picture, of course!). It had to go!  We got a new one, but it was still pretty boring.

 It needed paint!

We made one other quick update, too. Hung our big C outside as art!

Em helped.
Since then, I've gotten some colorful pillows and flowers, but I don't have a picture. It is WAY messy out there right now. I'll take one later ;)

Pantry Organization

I've been stressing about my kitchen ever since I started these organization projects. Every time I look in my craft closet, I smile! Every time I look in my pantry, I cringe. That's over now! But we won't discuss the rest of the cabinets, yet!

I didn't take a before picture. Typical.

My new baskets from The Container Store didn't work out like I had planned, but I was DETERMINED to use them anyway! I'm stubborn like that.

I put Em's snacks in these baskets, so it would be easy for her to get them herself. We'll see how well it works out.

Another little change we've made in the house...

New old Cuthand road sign! I LOOVVVEE it!

Work in Progress: Garage

Clinton was home today, so we tackled another big project on my Resolution list. Our garage. The plan was to clean out, install shelving, and organize. (Man, I have the organizing bug BAD!) Today, we completed step one: clean out!

Oh, but it needed it...

Just barely enough room for my car!

Sorry, this picture is so blurry. Guess I was distracted by some little kid!

That tree is so on my nerves right now!
I have to admit that while I did do some of the work, 90% of it was Clinton! He did a pretty good job!

Please ignore the dancing, pant-less kid.

The Christmas stuff will go in the attic once I find something to put that massive tree in!

Our trash guys hate us.

Clean up, clean up, everybody clean up!

I have been battling with Emma all week about picking up her toys. She USED to be pretty good about cleaning up. She sings "Clean up, clean up, everybody clean up!" But the past few weeks have been awful. She comes up with a ton of excuses on why she can't clean up. Some of her "gems":

"I'm tired, I need to take a nap"
"It's not flair (fair) that I have to clean up my toys"
"I don't wanna clean up, Mommy"
"I can't pick up my toys"

and her favorite...

"I NEED HAY- ELP!" (help)
Lord, if I hear that ONE more time....

I've instituted a clean up time everyday, I've threatened to throw everything not cleaned up in the trash, I've actually thrown toys away, put her in time-out...what do I do? How do you get your toddler to clean up their room? What tips do you have?

Today, I'd had enough and just decided to do it myself, while Em was a MDO.

This is AFTER I'd worked on it for a little while...

While cleaning, I realized that there was one thing about Em's room that had been bothering me. Her kitchen. Even when the rest of her toys are put away, the kitchen toys are just thrown on the kitchen and messy looking. Then a light bulb when off!

I had a couple of fabric storage boxes left over from my craft closet project. So I put them to use!

Now the play food and dishes have their own home! And everything can be hidden out of sight!

I'm telling you, once you get started organizing, you see places to organize everywhere!

Craft Supply Closet

Today, the organizing project I've been planning for months was finally finished!

This closet started out as a coat closet, with cleaning supplies stuck in the bottom, and misc. stuck in the top.

Here is the only before picture I remembered to take, after taking everything out of the bottom!

Clinton put some new shelves in for me! Then I loaded it up with Em's art supplies, etc.

Overview! I asked Clinton to make the bottom shelf wide, so I could use it as a desktop if so needed!

I still have SO much room! I am so excited about how it turned out! I can't wait to do crafts with Emma!

Out with the Crappy, In with the Old

Newer isn't always better. Nope.

Definitely not in the case of our desk.

Our jumbled, messy, particle board, falling apart, "newer" desk went out the door!

And a vintage, solid wood, huge desk came in.

I bought it off a swapping page on Facebook! How great is that?!? I got it WAY cheaper than if I had bought a new (less quality) one.

All of that hutch space in the first one doesn't even compare to the huge drawers in the second one! I have EMPTY drawers, people! Just look how nice it looks with everything hidden away and not out for everyone to see!

Organizing Em's Room

Well, the crud that is going around is taking no prisoners. Em and I stayed home from MDO/ work today because she is running fever. However, with her down for the count, camped out on the couch watching cartoons, I got some work done and managed to organize a little this afternoon!

I had a couple plastic buckets (tubs, totes, whatever you call them) at Hobby Lobby. I didn't really know what I would put in them when I bought them, but like an epiphany, it hit me today!

Em's dress up stuff!

It was all crammed into two drawers in Em's cabinet, but of course, I forgot to take a before picture. After separating it all, I stored them in her closet. There, it will be easy for her to get to and play!

Dress up clothes in the blue, accessories & high heels in the pink. Obviously something needs to be done about the shoes in that basket, though!

Em did manage to perk up when I got my camera out, little heifer. (Fever is down, thank goodness!) She came a running, and said "Take a picture of me right here, Mommy!"

With that stuff out of the drawers, I separated Em's hats and purses into two drawers. They were all stuffed into one drawer and it wouldn't even open! Now, they each have their own home, and I have an empty drawer, just waiting for something to be stored there!

Since I was taking picture of organizing, I went ahead and took some pictures of the DVD/ toy organizing I did when we redid Em's room.

Again, with the camera hogging!
I do have a little problem in Em's room that I can't come up with any good solutions for..

What is the best way to organize this mess? Puzzles, blocks, etc..

More Organizing Projects

This week I've completed two more (small) organizing projects on my quest for an organized household.

First, I placed a wire basket on the bar in my kitchen to be our "dumping ground". I hate having the mail scattered from place to place, and never knowing where receipts are, etc.

Now, the mail and receipts can be put here until I've had a chance to deal with it.

The second project I completed this week was done out of necessity (not only organizing purposes). Our fridge had a SMELL. Clinton and I had both been through it, and had thrown away everything we thought could be causing the SMELL, put new boxes of baking soda in, and still, it remained. I assumed the only thing that would work would be to take everything out, clean, and put things back. So I did. (Em helped...if you can believe that! HA!)

I threw out everything that I thought COULD be causing the SMELL. Including things that were probably still good, and things that WERE still good (a pkg of summer sausage that Clinton had just opened that day.... he should have told me, or better yet, helped me!) BTW, the food in those containers was from that day, so I knew they weren't the culprit!

Then Em and I sprayed it down with Lysol cleaner and wiped it out. (*Disclaimer- it really wasn't TOO bad. Don't go thinking it looked like a hoarder's fridge!)

Then I put things back in an organized fashion-
Drinks, Dairy Products, Fruit, Leftovers, Veggie Drawer, Deli Drawer
In the door- butter, cooking things, salad things, condiments, misc.

Despite almost the whole bottle of cleaner being sprayed into it (Em loves to spray!), the smell is STILL there! What the heck!

What should I do now? Anyone have any tips or tricks?
